Well, Google has all the answers, you know that!
The British royal family changed their last name from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor in 1917. The reason? World War One broke out in 1914 and anit-German sentiment was at its height in 1917. In protest, King George V renounced all the German titles belonging to him and his family and adopted the name of his castle, Windsor.

Oooooo! I love this stuff! British Royalty is one of my areas of interest. I coulda given you the same info without going to Google. Seriously! AND, did you know that Queen Victoria and Albert only rarely spoke English to each other -- they almost always communicated in German. There's a lot of German blood in the Royals.
